One of Daniel Farke's first jobs at Borussia-Park will be to assess the quality and depth of the players he will be working with. After two consecutive seasons outside the European places, changes are expected to the on-pitch personnel.

So, for this piece, we will be assessing where Gladbach currently stand with each member of the squad and how long they have left on their respective contracts.

Necessities

Firstly, the most important thing is establishing who Farke wants to keep at the club and who he wants to let go. As it stands, Gladbach roughly have cover in each position so they are more or less in a position where they will have to move players on to let others arrive.

Secondly, sorting out the contractual situation of a number of key players over the last few seasons. The two that stand out are Hofmann and Embolo. Hofmann, a regular German international has been Die Fohlen's most consistent player over the past two seasons and would leave a massive hole in the side if he was to move on.

As for Embolo, at 25 he still has his best years ahead of him and although his finishing can be wasteful at times, he does offer a serious presence up front and was popular under Adi Hütter last term, scoring nine goals.

Other key players with their contracts expiring in a years time include the likes of Bensebaini, Thuram, Plea and Sommer.

It would be unlikely that Bensebaini signs a new deal with the growing indication being that he is looking to move on. Plea and Thuram could also follow the Algerian through the exit door while Sommer will certainly have offers if he does decide to run down his contract with the club.

What Borussia Mönchengladbach must try and avoid doing is repeating the same situation that developed with Matthias Ginter and Denis Zakaria, last summer.

Neither seemed keen on signing a new deal and rather than cashing in at the optimum opportunity, they allowed their contracts to run down. Zakaria left in January to join Juventus for a minimal fee while Ginter joined his hometown club SC Freiburg for free this summer.

Incoming arrivals

If all goes to plan it seems that both Ko Itakura and Riechedly Bazoer  will be joining the club in coming days.

Itakura and Bazoer play in similar positions with the pair comfortable at both centre-back and in holding midfield.

This will leave Gladbach in a strong position going into the new camapign with serious depth at the heart of the defence and in the centre of the park.

Potential departures

Apart from the players who's contract are expiring in 2023, one other member of the squad is likely to be leaving in László Bénes.

The Slovakian midfielder is expected to drop down a division and join 2.Bundesliga side Hamburger SV.

Since joining Gladbach in 2016, he has played 65 games but never has been able to hold down a regular starting berth.
