Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte heads into his first full season in charge of the club when his side begin their campaign against Southampton on Saturday.

It has been a summer of change for Spurs, who have seen six new arrivals at the club as part of an overhaul of the squad, who managed to secure a Champions League spot over rivals Arsenal on the final day last term.

The first challenge of this campaign however for The Lilywhites will be a Southampton side that Spurs only took a point from last season.

Tottenham threw away a 2-1 lead at home to lose 2-3 in the same fixture last season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

With that in mind, Conte will know it will be a tough test for his side on Saturday afternoon, and here is the side he could be set to play.

Formation

It is well known that Conte likes to make use of the wide areas of the pitch, often playing wider setups which are based around hard working wing backs.

This was a system that Spurs adjusted to towards the end of last season, finishing the campaign unbeaten in their last six matches.

The main systems that Tottenham deployed under Conte were the 3-5-2 and 3-4-3 formations, both of which changed to a back five out of possession.

However The Lilywhites had more success using the 3-4-3 at the end of last season, which was the best setup to make the most of their deadly front three.

It is therefore likely that Conte will favour the 3-4-3 formation against Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

Defence

Hugo Lloris

The Frenchman enters his 12th season between the sticks for the North Londoners and the captain is highly likely to start against The Saints unless he picks up an injury in training later on this week.

Fraser Forster will be a welcome backup for Tottenham in goal following the end of Pierluigi Gollini's loan spell, but he is not expected to make his debut this weekend.

Cristian Romero

The Argentine impressed in his debut season at Spurs, becoming a valuable member to the squad, which had been crying out for a solid central defender.

Romero has the perfect balance between being a no nonsense defender who is prepared to put his body on the line in defence, and a more modern style centre back who can bring the ball forwards.

He will also be one of the first names on Conte's team sheet.

Eric Dier

Dier had a much improved season at Spurs last term in the backline having struggled to win over fans in recent seasons.

The former England international has been at the heart of the Spurs defence under Conte, who has been quick to praise the impact that Dier has had on his side.

As a result of that, the centre back is also highly likely to start on Saturday.

Davinson Sanchez

Arguably the most difficult position to pick on the pitch, the left centre back position remains the most uncertain part of Conte's side.

It has been reported many times throughout the summer that Tottenham had been looking to strengthen in defence, namely on the left hand side.

Whether or not Conte sees Barcelona loanee and new signing Clement Lenglet as the player to fill the space remains to be seen, but as he as not had a full pre-season, it is unlikely he will be Conte's choice for Southampton.

Ben Davies, the first choice last season, is likely to miss out with an injury that saw him leave the friendly against Rangers, which Spurs won 1-2, in a protective boot.

That leaves Sanchez as the main option to replace Davies for the game.

A player who divides opinion, the Colombian has been inconsistent during his spell at Tottenham, but played an important role at the end of last season, which may be enough to get him a place in the team.

Midfield

Matt Doherty

Another choice which is up for debate, but the Irishman was in excellent form before picking up an injury which ended his season early last campaign.

New signing Djed Spence is still young and could start, but may miss out this time due to his lack of Premier League experience having been on loan at then-Championship side Nottingham Forest last season.

The right wing back role is still up for debate and one that Conte could well change across the course of the season

Ivan Perisic

The 33 year old could make his first appearance in North London against Southampton.

Perisic has worked with Conte before at Inter Milan and is well respected by the Italian, and whilst Ryan Sessegnon ended last season well, Perisic is the more likely to start on Saturday.

As for Sergio Reguilon, the wing back was once well liked at Tottenham but has fallen down the pecking order, and was not taken on the pre-season tour of South Korea, leading to questions over his future at the club.

Yves Bissouma

Another predicted debutant, Bissouma arrives from Brighton after an impressive spell on the south coast.

The central midfielder makes for the perfect upgrade in the middle of the park, likely to beat the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp to the position.

Both Hojbjerg and Skipp are likely to still be in Conte's plans, with a lot of games to be played the two are sure to get minutes later on in the season even if they are not picked for the opening game.

Rodrigo Bentancur

A superb addition to the squad in January, Bentancur has brought calmness and composure to the midfield.

He will be expected to keep his place in the squad for the upcoming campaign having been influential in Spurs' successful attempt to finish in the top four last season.

Attack

Dejan Kulusevski

A few months ago this would have been a very easy choice for Spurs fans, as Kulusevski has very quickly become a fan favourite in North London.

Having arrived on loan with an option to buy from Juventus in January, Kulusevski completes the Spurs front three and is the more likely to start against The Saints.

That said, the arrival of big money signing Richarlison from Everton could put his place in the starting 11 in jeopardy, as most would expect the two to be rotated by Conte over the course of the season.

Harry Kane

The next two picks are very simple. Kane ended last season back to his best after a chaotic start to the year in which it looked like he would leave the club for Manchester City

His situation has changed a lot since then, and the number 10 and star striker will be determined to get off to the perfect start to the campaign.

Kane will be vital to Tottenham this season, and if he can stay fit this term, there is plenty of reason for optimism at the club.

Heung-Min Son

The other half of the duo which has combined for the most goals in Premier League history, Son will be looking to continue his partnership with Kane against Southampton.

The joint golden boot winner netted 23 times last season and will be a threat to The Saints at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Son scored four goals against Southampton at Saint Mary's back in September 2020, something Ralph Hassenhuttl and his side will be all too wary of ahead of the match.
