National League North side Curzon Ashton bravely earned a replay in their FA Cup tie with Cambridge United, holding the League One side to a goalless draw at the Tameside Stadium.

Both sides had chances in an open affair, but lacked the finishing in the final third and the two teams will meet at the Abbey Stadium to decide who progresses to the second round.

Story of the match

Cambridge manager Mark Bonner made two changes to his side with Harrison Dunk returning from injury to replace George Williams and Sam Smith took the spot of Jack Lankester.

With an unfamiliar setting and rainy, soaking conditions, Dunk was booked in the early stages for preventing Will Hayhurst from breaking forward, but Will Mannion easily gathered in the subsequent free-kick by Connor Hampson.

On 12 minutes, the visitors created the first clear-cut chance of the afternoon as James Brophy was played in down the left and he passed to Harvey Knibbs, who missed a wide-open goal.

Minutes later, Curzon Ashton had their first sight of goal when Tom Peers robbed U's defender Zeno Ibsen Rossi of possession and Josh Hancock was narrowly wide.

Smith's 20th-minute strike flew over the bar before Joe Ironside latched onto Jubril Okedina's cross, forcing Chris Renshaw into a simple save.

Ryan Hall was forced off for the hosts with injury, replaced by Connor Dimaio.

On 33 minutes, Hancock blazed over and after the hosts won the ball back by the corner flag, The Nash worked it into a good position only to see the striker fail to hit the target from ten yards away.

Renshaw was force to get down low and parry from Paul Digby's strike just outside the area before the visitors best chance of the first half, Brophy playing across for Knibbs, narrowly off-target.

DiMaio should have opened the scoring after being played in by Hayhurst as his left-footed volley was inches away from ten yards with the goal at his mercy.

He had another chance early in the second half, but a last-ditch block by the Cambridge defense spared their blushes.

In the 55th minute, Bonner brought on Lankester and Shilow Tracey in place of Smith and Dunk.

The U's had a golden chance with 20 minutes remaining, Lewis Simper teed up from eight yards out, the outstretched foot of Renshaw denying him.

Lankester's free-kick was inches away from finding the back of the net on 80 minutes and Simper was withdrawn in favor of Ben Worman.

Knibbs then met a Tracey cross, but guided his effort over the bar as the visitors pushed for a winner.

Worman then caused panic in The Nash defense with a curling ball in the box and a goalline scramble saw the ball fall the wrong side of the post.

The hosts had one final opportunity as a free-kick by Jordan Richards bounced in front of Mannion, who did well to palm the ball away for a corner. The ensuing set-piece came to nothing and the two teams will have another go at it in eight days' time.
