Leeds United secured a memorable win at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon, cruising past a sorry Chelsea side 3-0.

It was a huge win for the Whites, who dominated for large periods in the game to secure their first win against a 'big six' side of the Jesse Marsch era.

Goals from Brenden Aaronson and a fine header from Rodrigo had Leeds in full control at the break.

Rodrigo turned provider in the second half to set up Jack Harrison, crowning a fantastic win for Leeds.

To make matters worse for the visitors, Kalidou Koulibaly saw red late on for a second bookable offence, fouling Joe Gelhardt.

Story of the match

Raheem Sterling created a fantastic chance for the Blues in the opening minute of the game, cutting in from the left hand side and beating several players.

The former Manchester City man curled his effort just past the post when he eventually let fly from the edge of the area.

Dan James had the first shot of the game for Leeds, but he fired well over.

Pascal Struijk then tested Eduoard Mendy for the first time in the tie from the left hand side, but it was a comfortable save for the Senegalese keeper.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek was on the end of a fast counter attack from the visitors, but his shot was blocked.

It was a fast paced opening five minutes, which saw both sides fashion good opportunities with high pressing and intricate passing.

Koulibaly was booked early on for a cynical foul on Aaronson, holding his shirt as the American looked to break for the Whites.

Sterling had the ball in the net in the 15th minute, again turning his man on the left hand side after receiving a lofted pass.

He slotted the ball into the bottom right hand corner, but the offside flag was raised against him.

Chelsea continued to play out from the back but looked shaky when doing so, as the hosts continued to press their backline as they passed the ball between each other.

Koulibaly looked to hit the ball long, but could only find the grateful arms of Illan Meslier.

Rodrigo raced onto a pass that allowed him to shoot, but he was at a tight angle and unable to find the target.

Chelsea pressure

Mason Mount drove at the heart of the Whites' defence, aiming his effort for the bottom right hand corner but Meslier was able to palm it behind for a corner which came to nothing.

Marc Cucurella flashed the ball across the box, but it was cleared before a Chelsea player could turn the ball in.

The tempo of the game had slowed slightly after a fast start, with Thomas Tuchel's side seemingly beginning to assert themselves in the match having struggled to do so early on.

Diego Llorente managed to get onto the end of a corner for the hosts, but he headed over.

Rodrigo tried to squeeze the ball past Mendy at the front post, but he could only force a routine stop.

Leeds take their chances

Aaronson gave Jesse Marsch's side the lead with his first ever goal for the Whites, but it was a howler from Mendy.

The pressure from the hosts on the Blues' backline paid off, as the keeper tried to turn his man and was caught in possession, which Aaronson was able to effectively walk into the net.

It was 2-0 soon after, as Leeds capitalised on their period in control of the game.

Rodrigo flicked on a cross beyond the unmoved Mendy to double the lead in the 37th minute, which sent the home crowd wild.

Loftus-Cheek cut the ball back to Cucurella from the byline looking to pull one back for the West London club, but his effort dribbled wide of the post.

The hosts had led by two against Southampton in their last game before being pegged back to draw 2-2.

Marsch's side would have known that staying in the ascendancy and defending well would be vital to hold onto all three points, even with a long way to go in the game.

Aaronson's dipping effort from range was saved by Mendy in added time in the first half.

Leeds United led deservedly led 2-0 at the break, playing some clever football and putting their opponents under pressure.

Tuchel's side looked bereft of ideas at the interval and needed to improve if they wanted to avoid leaving West Yorkshire empty handed.

Cucurella was on the end of a move to start the second half, but his effort was blazed over the bar.

Koulibaly was on hand to intercept a shot from Rodrigo at the other end, as the Spaniard looked to get his second goal of the game.

A counter attack from the visitors found its way to Mount, who could only see his effort blocked.

Conor Gallagher had a shot from close range which was well saved by Meslier, but the flag was up against the former Crystal Palace loanee.

James looked to pick out Harrison with a floated cross, but Thiago Silva was on hand to turn the ball behind for a corner to Leeds.

The corner worked its way back to Tyler Adams, who fired the ball towards goal from range but was blocked by the crowd of bodies in front of the goal.

Gallagher turned and shoot inside the area, but his effort was deflected behind for a corner which Chelsea did not take advantage of.

Reece James made a driving run towards goal and drilled a shot towards the bottom corner, but Meslier was equal to it.

He later flashed the ball across goal, but the offside flag prevented the attack from having any meaning.

Harrison had the goal to compile the misery for Chelsea, making it 3-0.

James crossed to Rodrigo, who stretched to find Harrison who duly tapped in whilst staying onside to secure a memorable win for Leeds.

He looked to add salt into the wounds when he crossed to Rodrigo, who could not find the target on the stretch.

Things went from bad to worse for the Blues, when Koulibaly received a second yellow card for pulling substitute Gelhardt's shirt late on in the game.

Full time secured a massive victory for Marsch and his players, who had proven their worth with a convincing 3-0 win against Chelsea.

The hosts' ability had come into question after the sales of big names such as Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha in the summer, but Leeds answered their critics in style.

On the flip side, Tuchel's side were poor on Sunday afternoon, and will wonder how they were outfought and outplayed so comfortably by their opponents.

Player of the match

There were a few players that could have been worthy of the award after a superb win for Leeds, but Rodrigo was the player that helped to make the difference for Marsch's side.

Not only did he score the second goal of the game with a wonderful flick on past Mendy, he also used his pace to his advantage.

He managed to get the ball up the pitch, playing some clever passes on the day and also hounding the Chelsea backline.

Aaronson deserves credit for the way in which he pressed up the pitch throughout the game and got his reward with his first ever goal in West Yorkshire, but Rodrigo was a class above on Sunday afternoon.

The Spaniard even got the assist for Harrison's goal to make it 3-0 in the second half.
