Southampton welcome Newcastle United to St Mary's for the first leg of this Carabao Cup tie on Tuesday evening.

Nathan Jones and his side defied the odds in the quarter-finals and knocked out Premier League champions Manchester City to set up this huge semi-final clash.

This will be their first League Cup semi-final since 2017, where they made it to the final after beating Liverpool, but they went on to lose this game to José Mourinho's Manchester United side 3-2.

Newcastle head down to the south coast after a disappointing 0-0 draw away to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

This result means that they have now kept six league clean sheets on the bounce in the league, with the last team to score past them being their semi-final opponents back on November 6th.

It will be The Magpies first League cup semi final in 47 years, so they will hope to take their league form with them and put themselves a step closer to Wembley.

The winner across the two legs will set up a cup final against either Manchester United or Nottingham Forest.

  • Team News

Southampton

Southampton will be without Tino Livramento and Juan Larios for this clash, with both players still nursing injuries.

Second-choice goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, as well as Theo Walcott and Armel Bella-Kotchap, are also unlikely to be available in time.

Therefore, Jones still has plenty of options to choose from in his youthful and exciting squad, making his line-up hard to predict as he heads into his biggest game as Southampton manager so far.

Newcastle

The Magpies will certainly be without the likes of Emil Krafth, Jonjo Shelvey and Matt Targett for their trip to St Mary's, with the latter two already seeing minutes in this competition this season.

However, they will have fan-favourite Bruno Guimarães fit for this clash, with the Brazilian making a surprising start and completing the full 90 at Selhurst Park on Saturday, despite suffering what looked to be a serious ankle injury only a week prior against Fulham.

They also have Allan Saint-Maximin ready to go if called upon for this game, with the Frenchman providing serious firepower and threat when coming off the bench this season.

  • Key Players

Key Player for Southampton - James Ward-Prowse

Southampton's captain has certainly led by example and has increased his output since the Premier League's resumption from the World Cup.

Known for being one of the best set piece takers in world football, the Saints' skipper has scored five goals in his last seven games, with three of these coming from his trademark free-kicks.

Many believe that he was unlucky to not be given a seat on the plane to Qatar, but the Englishman has certainly proven his quality in recent weeks, perhaps issuing a statement to England Manager Gareth Southgate.

Key Player for Newcastle -  Alexander Isak

The Swede has had a up and down start to his Newcastle career so far that has seen injuries halt his progress.

He currently has three goals in five Premier League games for The Magpies, with his most recent goal being of huge importance when he came off the bench to score the winner against Fulham.

The only game he has started in 2023 so far was Newcastle shock 2-1 defeat away to Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup, however he looks threatening every time he plays and could be a key player across these two legs.
