Australia produced another shock at the 2022 World Cup as the Socceroos defeated Denmark 1-0 in Group C.

Mathew Leckie scored the only goal of the match on the hour mark, dribbling from the halfway and finishing low past Kasper Schmeichel as Graham Arnold's men reached the knockout stages for the first time since 2006.

This was also the first time they have ever won two games at the same finals, as well as the first time they have beaten a European opponent at the World Cup.

Here is how VAVEL rated the two teams following their encounter at the Al Janoub Stadium.

Australia

Mat Ryan - 8

Battled to make a couple of unorthodox saves and did well to claim a few high balls. Dealt with a flurry of late Denmark corners expertly.

Milos Degenek - 6

Worked over on a few occasions, but stood tall like the rest of his back-line counterparts to see out danger time and time again.

Harry Souttar - 8

He's been the Socceroos top player of the tournament by a wide margin. Wasn't called on as much here as against Tunisia, but still got in a few challenges.

Kye Rowles - 7

Was first-class throughout and good in the air. Held the line together when Denmark attacked.

Aziz Behich - 7

Booked early in the game, but maintained solid positional play after that. Was quite successful in one-on-ones.

Mathew Leckie - 7

Scored the goal that sent Australia to the last 16, making a magnificent run and coolly finishing past Kasper Schmeichel.

Aaron Mooy - 8

Worked his socks off and also bravely passed forward to try and get the Socceroos on top of the action.

Jackson Irvine - 7

Gets a lot from his runs. Was alert to clear second balls in front of the defense even if he isn't making the first challenge.

Craig Goodwin - 6

One of the few Australian players to not have a great game. Subbed out at halftime after tracking back over the first 45 minutes.

Mitchell Duke - 7

Led the line with conviction, ran into one channel then the other, had the odd direct ball come to him and tried to hold it up and link the play. One wayward shot, one half-decent attempt.

Riley McGree - 6

Had an excellent all-around game, running non-stop and showed the ability to double up on the defensive end of the field or provide an outlet in attack. Played the pass on Leckie's goal.

Substitutes

Keanu Baccus - 6

Bailey Wright - N/A

Jamie MacLaren - N/A

Ajdin Hrustic - N/A

Denmark

Kasper Schmeichel - 6

Couldn't do much about the goal. Not very busy otherwise with a few shots straight at him.

Rasmus Kristensen - 5

Was replaced at halftime after not offering much in attack.

Andreas Christensen - 6

Was poor in allowing the goal. Wasn't close enough to his man, didn't close down the angle of the run, and didn't block Leckie's shot. Good in possession and in the air.

Joachim Andersen - 5

Wasn't very busy, but was poor in the air, losing several duels. Got lucky Irvine shot over after finding space behind him.

Joakim Maehle - 6

Strong as an out-ball in the first half, got high and wide on his man, but faded after halftime and was eventually replaced.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg - 7

Tried his best to get Denmark forward, but his passing, while with a purpose and intent, did little and at the odd moment, he tried to shoot.

Christian Eriksen - 5

Had his worst game of the tournament at the worst possible time. Really poor on set-piece deliveries, didn't have many shots and never got many chances to pass in the final third.

Mathias Jensen - 6

Lively in the midfield and tried to make up the extra man in the box. Was curiously taken off on the hour mark.

Andreas Skov Olsen - 5

Another Danish player who had a bright start and tapered off. Had plenty of shots, but none were of quality.

Jesper Lindstrom - 5

Was an outlet at times and got into the box, getting off a couple of shots, but nothing of consequence.

Martin Braithwaite - 6

Decent movement and looked to set up his teammates often, but wasn't a goal threat himself. Denmark failed to attack once he departed.

Substitutes

Alexander Bah - 5

Kasper Dolberg - 5

Martin Damsgaard - 5

Robert Skov - 4

Andreas Cornelius - 4
