Spain remain top as Germany stay bottom of Group E with a 1-1 stalemate at the Al Bayt Stadium in the 2022 World Cup.

La Roja striker Alvaro Morata put his side in front just after the hour mark, with international rookie forward Niclas Fullkrug firing home the equaliser seven minutes from time.

The result means the 'Group of Death' will go to the final match day, with all teams able to progress or go out.

Here's how both sets of players fared tonight:

  • Spain

Unai Simon - 6

Passing and kicking left a lot to be desired as he constantly put his defence under pressure. Made a key save from Musiala but was well beaten for Fullkrug's eventual goal.

Dani Carvajal – 5.5

Looked anything but experienced as he misplaced passes and put in some rash challenges throughout.

Rodri – 6

Never quite seemed comfortable at centre back, especially when Germany went more direct. Kept Asensio quiet, though.

Aymeric Laporte – 6

Composed and won aerial duels throughout. Will be disappointed with the goal as he allowed Fullkrug too much space to score.

Jordi Alba – 7

Got forward well and kept Gnabry relatively quiet. Grabbed himself an assist after knowing exactly where Morata would be for his goal.

Sergio Busquets – 5.5

Often struggled when Germany broke forward on the transition. Off-colour in the first half but was more like himself as the game went on.

Pedri – 6

Was the main driving force from midfield. Tried a lot but not everything came off. Isolated Busquets defensively at times as he pressed the German defence.

Gavi – 6

Bought fouls well from Goretzka and Kimmich but struggled to affect the game as he can do. Understandably, the one midfielder to be substituted for more experience in the centre.

Ferran Torres – 5.5

Struggled to get into the game and misplaced numerous passes in the first 45. Shame he could not bring his previous game's form into this one, and he could now lose his starting spot after Morata's success.

Marco Asensio – 6

Offered very little and still couldn’t get on the ball after trying to drop deeper. False nine role did not work against the German defence and midfield. Moved wide as Morata came on and was better there.

Dani Olmo – 6.5

Fierce early shot was well saved onto the crossbar and he was Spain's main attacking outlet throughout. Always looked to run at Kehrer and get in behind the defence.

Substitutes

Alvaro Morata (for Torres 53’) – 7

First real action was a smart finish for the opener as he got in front of Sule and flicked it cooly past Neuer. Offered Enrique's side a real target man and outlet and will hope to start against Japan. Could have won it in the 89th minute was it not for some slight hesitation and good recovery work from Schlotterbeck.

Nico Williams (for Asensio 65’) – 6

Looked to break and get in behind. Tricky play but seemed raw and possibly not the wisest change when trying to defend a lead.

Koke (for Gavi 65’) – 5.5

Slow when on the ball and did not have the same effect as the younger midfielders in driving it forward.

Alejandro Balde (for Alba 82’) – 5.5

Was caught positionally in his first moments on the field as Fullkrug tucked the ball away.

Manuel Neuer – 6

Great early save from Olmo as he pushed it onto the crossbar. Kicking was unusually poor, and he seemed unnerved throughout.

Thilo Kehrer – 5.5

Constantly allowed Olmo and Asensio too much space and was reluctant to go forward. Booked and ran ragged, Flick had eventually seen enough on seventy minutes.

Niklas Sule – 5.5

Allowed space in behind too often and let Morata run across him for his goal. Playing a high line does not suit his style.

Antonio Rudiger – 6

Had the ball in the net for a potential opener but was deemed offside after a VAR check. Not one of his finest showings as he struggled to progress the ball with some wayward long passes.

David Raum – 6

Inconsistent. Some nice moments but then would lose his man or misplace a pass. Threw the ball straight out from his own throw-in at one point.

Joshua Kimmich – 5.5

Bypassed by Pedri too often in the first half. Booked second half for late tackle and his set pieces were inconsistent throughout. Struggled with lack of support from his fellow midfielders.

Leon Goretzka – 5.5

Had the least touches (41) of any outfield player to play 90 minutes, summing up his game completely. Booked in the second half after persistent fouling, with Pedri and Gavi finding it too easy to glide past him.

Ilkay Gundogan – 5.5

Ineffective this time out after being one of Germany's best attackers against Japan. Just could not impact the game with limited space in the midfield.

Serge Gnabry – 6

Constantly caught offside but was, at least, looking to create and run at defenders.

Thomas Muller – 5.5

Held the ball up well to bring Musiala and Gnabry into play but could not win headers or get in behind against a somewhat shaky Spain defence. Another ineffective starter.

Jamal Musiala – 7.5

Nice touches and dribbles as he pressed Carvajal into copious mistakes. Was the only German player that looked like they could create chances and their best player throughout. Great chance to score at 1-0 down as he got in behind, but Simon saved well. Assist was somewhat lucky but unsurprising that it was him to get it.

Niclas Fullkrug (for Muller 70’) – 7

Couple chances went abegging after he'd came on, with a block by Rodri saving a probable goal. Changed his side's fortunes as the Spanish defenders struggled to deal with the change in style. Grabbed the equaliser seven minutes from time with a stunning strike into the top corner.

Lukas Klostermann (for Kehrer 70’) – 6

Kept Olmo quieter than his teammate Kehrer had. Will possibly push for a start against Costa Rica.

Leroy Sane (for Gundogan 70’) – 6.5

Persistent and looked to catch Spain on the break. Could and probably should have won it in the dying minutes but opted to take it round Simon and ran out of room.

Jonas Hofmann (for Gnabry 85’) – 5.5

Put himself about but created little.

Nico Schlotterbeck (for Raum 87’) – 6

Brilliant tackle on Morata after he’d played him onside was his only important action.
