Manchester City host Chelsea in the FA Cup third round hoping to compound the misery on Graham Potter after a 1-0 victory over their opponents on Thursday evening.

The visitors have won just once in their last eight games, losing four and travel to Manchester with a growing injury list. However, their form in the FA Cup in the past few seasons will give them a reason to be encouraged.

They have reached the final of the competition for the last three seasons, coming up short in the final each time, to Arsenal, Leicester and Liverpool

Pep Guardiola's side have reached the semi-final stage for three successive seasons, losing to Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool after thrashing Watford to lift the trophy in 2019.

The clash at the Etihad promises to be a thrilling encounter, both sides enjoying encouraging periods in Thursday's contest, with City edging the possession with 53% and the shots with 12 to The Blues' eight.

Guardiola has only two players that are unlikely to feature in Sunday's match, Ruben Dias and Aymeric Laporte, the Spaniard may could rush his return in order to feature, but that is not expected to happen.

With an eye on Wednesday's trip to Southampton in the fourth round of the EFL Cup, the Man City manager could rest some of his key players.

Alternatively, he could prioritise the upcoming match and rest some of his stars for the trip to the South coast.

Julian Alvarez could return following his World Cup triumph in Qatar with Argentina and Kalvin Phillips may also be handed a start as he looks to work his way back to full fitness.

Chelsea

Graham Potter has an injury crisis on his hands at Stamford Bridge, he will be without ten first-team players for the clash.

Armando Broja, N'Golo Kante, Reece James, Edouard Mendy, Wesley Fofana, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ben Chilwell were already on the treatment table before Thursday's encounter.

They will joined by Mason Mount, who suffered an injury in the warm-up and Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic, who both left the field of play with injuries picked up during the loss.

The circumstances should allow talents such as Omari Hutchinson, Lewis Hall and Carney Chukwuemeka to shine under the lights and veteran striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will hope to feature.

Andrey Santos, Benoit Badiashile and David Datro Fofana have been confirmed as Chelsea players but are unlikely to feature on Sunday.

  • Likely Lineups

Manchester City

Ortega; Lewis, Stones, Akanji, Cancelo; Gundogan, Phillips, De Bruyne; Mahrez, Alvarez, Grealish

Chelsea

Kepa; Azpilicueta, Chalobah, Koulibaly, Cucurella; Gallagher, Zakaria, Chukwuemeka; Ziyech, Havertz, Aubameyang

Manchester City- Riyad Mahrez

It was his goal that separated the sides on Thursday, and the performance of the Algerian could have a hand in deciding whether his team progress to the next round.

Since coming back from the World Cup hiatus, he has scored in the victory over Liverpool in the EFL Cup, assisted Erling Haaland in the draw with Everton and scored the decisive goal against Chelsea just four days ago.

Mahrez also got on the scoresheet in City's 2-0 EFL Cup win over Chelsea earlier in the season, and could be motivated to make it three goals in three games against the visitors.

Chelsea- Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

It has not really clicked for the former Arsenal man since moving across London after a stint in Spain with Barcelona.

He has scored just three and assisted a single goal in 16 appearances for The Blues so far.

However, he has not had a chance to form a relationship with the players around him with the club having an injury crisis, and Aubameyang is a player that relies on service to prosper.

In his only FA Cup appearance against the hosts, he bagged a brace to seal Arsenal's progress to the FA Cup final in the 2019/20 season and then repeated it against his current employers in the final, to win The Gunners the trophy.
